The MLB Draft Combine times a 30-yard dash. Perfect Game records a 60 at every showcase it runs. Showcase circuits publish 10-yard split leaderboards captured off laser timing. All three come off the same style of sprint, and each one tells a coach something different about how an athlete moves. A pair of electronic timing gates times whichever distance a program needs, and adding gates adds the splits in between.
The 60 tells you whether speed keeps building
Sixty yards is the only one of the three distances that extends past the acceleration phase. Two athletes can run the same 10-yard split and post different 60s, because one keeps adding velocity through 40 and 50 yards while the other reaches top speed early and holds it. That second half of the run is the ground an outfielder covers on a ball in the gap and a runner covers going first to third. Acceleration and top-end speed behave as separate qualities, and the 60 is the number that reaches the second one.
The 60 is also the number recruiters read. Perfect Game runs it at every showcase and records every time [1]. Scouting grades on the 20-80 scale are set against it, where 6.9 to 7.0 seconds grades as major league average and 6.3 grades as an 80 [2], and college programs request a 60 before any other speed number. Whether it should still hold that position is an open argument among scouts and coaches [3]. For an athlete building a recruiting profile, it remains the entry requirement.
The 30 tells you how much speed an athlete builds by first base
The MLB Draft Combine times 30 yards instead of the 60 scouts leaned on for the better part of a century, because 30 yards is a base path [4]. Analysis of major league game situations identifies pure acceleration, rather than maximum velocity, as the primary determinant of speed to first base [5]. A 30-yard time measures the quality that decides that play and excludes the speed an athlete only reaches afterward.
The combine runs it with gates every five yards from a side-on starting stance, one warmup and two timed attempts [6, 7]. Across the results published from 2022 through 2024, the fastest time each year has fallen between 3.50 and 3.54 seconds, against a field average of 3.77 in 2023 [6]. The splits locate where an athlete gains ground. An athlete who separates between 15 and 30 yards has a different training need than one who separates in the first 10, and a total time alone does not distinguish them.
The 10 tells you how fast an athlete gets going
The 10-yard split isolates the acceleration phase, when the athlete is adding velocity on every step. Sprint research on adolescent male baseball players ties faster acceleration over that stretch to propulsive impulse and increasing step length across the first four steps [8].
OVR's 10-yard benchmarks put an average high school baseball athlete at 1.70 to 1.85 seconds, with 1.55 to 1.61 rating as advanced and college athletes a few hundredths quicker at each level. A split in the advanced band identifies a quick starter whatever the 60 says, which is what showcase circuits are ranking when they publish 10-yard leaderboards [9].
Timing them the same way every time
Baseball's timed sprints start the same way at every level. The athlete stands side-on to the line in a baserunner's leadoff position, lead foot at the mark, with no blocks and no starting gun [10, 11]. The clock starts when the body breaks the start beam and stops at the finish beam downfield. Because the athlete triggers the clock, the available start methods affect the number as much as the running does.
That cuts both ways. A lean or a reaching front side that breaks the beam before the athlete is running starts the clock early and adds time [11]. A start that keeps the body behind the beam until momentum has built delays the trigger and takes time off, the same bias a flying start introduces in any gate-timed sprint [12]. Neither reflects a change in how fast the athlete ran, which is why a program that holds one start protocol all season produces times it can compare across athletes and across test days.
All three are useful, at different points in the year. Speed programs commonly work acceleration early in the off-season and shift toward maximum velocity closer to the season [13]. That makes the 10 and the 30 the numbers to re-check through the early blocks, and the 60 the one most likely to have moved later. Read against jump, sprint, and strength data, the three of them describe how an athlete is developing rather than how fast they ran on one afternoon. Test on the same surface with the same start protocol every time, because that is what makes the times comparable.
